Parsing Minimalist Languages with Interpreted Regular Tree Grammars

چکیده
Minimalist Grammars (MGs) (Stabler, 1997) are a formalisation of Chomsky’s minimalist program (Chomsky, 1995), which currently dominates much of mainstream syntax. MGs are simple and intuitive to work with, and are mildly context sensitive (Michaelis, 1998), putting them in the right general class for human language (Joshi, 1985).1 Minimalist Grammars are known to be more succinct than their Multiple ContextFree equivalents (Stabler, 2013), to have regular derivation tree languages (Kobele et al., 2007), and to be recognisable in polynomial time (Harkema, 2001) with a bottom-up CKY-like parser. However, the polynomial is large, O(n4k+4) where k is a grammar constant. By approaching minimalist grammars from the perspective of Interpreted Regular Tree Grammars, we show that standard chart-based parsing is substantially computationally cheaper than previously thought at O(n2k+3 · 2k).

Alternating Regular Tree Grammars in the Framework of Lattice-Valued Logic
In this paper, two different ways of introducing alternation for lattice-valued (referred to as {L}valued) regular tree grammars and {L}valued top-down tree automata are compared. One is the way which defines the alternating regular tree grammar, i.e., alternation is governed by the non-terminals of the grammar and the other is the way which combines state with alternation. The first way is ta...
متن کاملMinimalist Tree Languages Are Closed Under Intersection with Recognizable Tree Languages
Minimalist grammars are a mildly context-sensitive grammar framework within which analyses in mainstream chomskyian syntax can be faithfully represented. Here it is shown that both the derivation tree languages and derived tree languages of minimalist grammars are closed under intersection with regular tree languages. This allows us to conclude that taking into account the possibility of ‘seman...
متن کاملA Generalized View on Parsing and Translation
We present a formal framework that generalizes a variety of monolingual and synchronous grammar formalisms for parsing and translation. Our framework is based on regular tree grammars that describe derivation trees, which are interpreted in arbitrary algebras. We obtain generic parsing algorithms by exploiting closure properties of regular tree languages.
متن کاملModels of Adjunction in Minimalist Grammars
Three closely related proposals for adding (cyclic) adjunction to Minimalist grammars are given model-theoretic definitions and investigated with respect to their linguistic and formal properties. While they differ with respect to their linguistic adequacy, they behave largely the same on a computational level. Weak generative capacity is not affected, and while subregular complexity varies bet...
متن کاملWeighted parsing of trees
We show how parsing of trees can be formalized in terms of the intersection of two tree languages. The focus is on weighted regular tree grammars and weighted tree adjoining grammars. Potential applications are discussed, such as parameter estimation across formalisms.
